USCIS Implements New Fee Schedule for Naturalization Applications
USCIS adjusted various immigration and naturalization fees, effective April 1, 2024. The N-400 application fee for naturalization saw changes, impacting prospective citizens.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) implemented a new, comprehensive fee schedule for most immigration and naturalization benefit requests, which took effect on April 1, 2024. This significant adjustment marks the first update to USCIS fees since 2016 and directly impacts individuals applying for U.S. citizenship through the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. The agency stated that the fee adjustments are crucial for recovering the full cost of agency operations, supporting new processing initiatives, and preventing future backlogs, which have historically plagued various immigration processes.
Under the revised schedule, the fee for filing Form N-400 increased for online applicants, moving from the previous total of $725 (which included the application fee and a separate biometrics fee) to a new consolidated fee of $760. Conversely, for those who choose to file paper applications, the fee saw a slight decrease from $725 to $710. A notable change is the incorporation of the $85 biometrics services fee directly into the main application fee for most applicants, effectively streamlining the cost structure and eliminating a separate payment requirement.
Furthermore, the new rule introduces a reduced fee option for eligible applicants who meet specific income guidelines, allowing them to pay $380 when filing a paper application. This provision aims to make the naturalization process more accessible to low-income individuals. It is also important to remember that active-duty military members and veterans, along with certain qualifying family members, remain exempt from naturalization application fees. USCIS strongly advises all prospective naturalization applicants to thoroughly review the most current fee information and filing instructions on the official USCIS website before submitting their applications.
